It was a great show, I loved every character and every story, found it highly amusing and laugh out loud funny at times.
However it really isn't the perfect show everybody says it is.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, it's a beautiful show (or should I say shiny?)
But if it was on TV now and not the years ago it was and suffered from the same fate of being cancelled, people would forget about it.
I think the main thing that made it so big was that Joss Whedon was in his prime for TV shows at the time. Buffy was around its final seasons as Firefly aired and of course with how popular Buffy was and that Nathan Fillion appeared in the final season of Buffy as the bad guy Caleb, it helped Firefly get the views.
I don't know why it was cancelled as it was definitely good enough to not be, but I'm guessing it just didn't get the ratings in.
And to be honest I think it's because it wasn't Buffy.
It didn't have the horror behind it or a strong female lead as Sarah Michelle Gellar. And I think that put some people off as it just wasn't what they expected.
However, the fans that stuck with it fell in love. They expected it to do as well as Buffy. And Joss had hoped it would have done as well with 7 seasons planned.
Alas it didn't make it.
And the fans went wild. To this day there are still petitions to bring a season 2 to television. But I think if it happened, it wouldn't have the popularity it has today.
It was possibly lucky that it was cancelled as now it has an amazing almost cult status.
And I don't even use the word cult loosely there.
You know who you are.
So in a perfect world, I would love to see a season 2. But with how long it's been I don't think it would benefit the show in the slightest as only the fans who watched the first season would watch it.
New people could easily be introduced and eased in gently, but the more mysterious plotlines would be hard to get into. Especially considering that it was planned to have Inara suffer from some disease, to getting gang raped, and poisoning them thanks to the cure she needed.
Also the plot of the Preacher, who quite clearly had something hidden. (This is based on a late viewing of Firefly and having not seen Serenity in years so I can't remember if they show the resolve of this)
Actually fuck it, it would be easy to watch a season 2 and not be lost.
I still prefer Buffy and to an extent Dollhouse though.
