I hate when people tell me or anyone else that they aren't true fans, or real fans of something just because that fan doesn't support one thing.
I've seen it more and more lately, I even got an email through asking if I was a true fan of Bethesda and if I was I needed to buy some Dragonborn necklace.
So if I don't buy that necklace, does it mean I aren't a true fan?
No.
No it doesn't.
And I'm not saying that Bethesda mean that you aren't either if you don't buy it. I'm sure they are just thinking ooh, here you go guys buy this and call yourself a true fan for loving it but they aren't trying to shit on those who don't.
But every day in comments sections of Facebook and Youtube, I see some complete bellend telling someone they aren't a true fan of something. I've been called it myself a few times.
YOU ARE ALLOWED TO NOT LIKE SOMETHING!
I see it mainly with bands, if one album comes out that is shit and you call it shit. You get called a fake fan.
You don't have to support everything they do.
Which is why I decided to write this article.
There was a post about the Halloween movies the other day which also included the Rob Zombie Halloween movies.
I for one don't like his remakes but love almost everything else he has released.
Straight away I was called a fake fan of Horror and of Rob Zombie purely based on the fact I don't like his Halloween remakes.
I even love Lords Of Salem and that for many is a disappointment.
So I ask you this, do you think there are true fans and fake fans of anything because they don't like one thing included?
My favourite band is Coheed and Cambria, I don't like their Year Of The Black Rainbow album as a whole but I'd still consider myself a massive fan of theirs.
My favourite horror franchise is the A Nightmare On Elm Street series, but I don't like the fifth film 'Dream Child', but I still consider myself a fan of those.
And that's my point right there.
TRUE FANS and FAKE FANS DO NOT EXIST. Unless you claim to be a fan of something and you don't know anything about it.
So Fake fans only exist in the sense of liking something because it's by your favourite band/writer/director/whatever.
But that's just my opinion.
What's yours?
Have you ever called someone a fake fan or not a true fan of something?
Why?
